DESCRIPTION
Edmonton is the capital of the Canadian province of Alberta, headquarters of the powers and the administration of the province, Edmonton is the second biggest city in the province (behind Calgary), and the fifth of Canada.
History
Edmonton was founded in 1795, when it established a post of the Company of Hudson Bay, while also built Fort Edmonton. John Rowand, fur trader of the North West Company, came to Edmonton in 1804 and was accepted by the Indians as head of the prairies, managing traffic fur from Edmonton along with the Cree and Foot-black in Edmonton for 30 years. The Fort Edmonton is thus placed in an economic hub of the region, the main stop for pioneers who headed north or farther west.
In 1870, more people residence on the outskirts of the fort, following the offer made by the government, giving land to settlers at a good price. In 1892, Edmonton officially became a village with 700 habitants. The city grew considerably during the Gold Rush of 1897, as many were arrested there for prospecting supplies. Already in 1904, Edmonton had 9000 habitants, and a year later was incorporated as a city, and named capital of the province.
In 1912, Edmonton, located on the north shore of the North Saskatchewan River, is along with its neighboring city, Strathcona, on the southern shore, increasing the population to 53,000. The bridge linking both sides was completed in 1913. In the decade of the 1930s, Edmonton continued to play a role as a business center, and point to send food and medicine by air. In 1942, the construction of the Alaska Highway to transform the city into a point of paramount importance for the transportation of people and supplies to the north, being named the "gateway to the north."
Latest conclusion of the Second World War, were discovered deposits of oil in near the city. This area is thus placed in the center of extracting oil from across Alberta, and after the boom tanker, Edmonton acquired a new status as the Oil Capital in Canada. The city began to grow even more dramatically after the Arabic boycott of 1973 and merged with surrounding cities, from Edmonton metropolitan population grew to more than 900,000 habitants. The extraction of oil and refinery persist as the basis of the economy and jobs from Edmonton, but also other industries have grown in importance as the population has multiplied and diversified.
